Gallery Talk with NEQM Curator Pamela Weeks

“Collaborative Quilting”

This gallery talk is offered in conjunction with the exhibition, Portable Patchwork, on view April 18 through July 15, 2023. Documented in thousands of quilts over three centuries, collaborative quilting served many purposes including fundraising for church projects and quilts that commemorate significant events or honor a beloved church leader. Women on both sides of the American Civil War made quilts and coverlets to supply their men on the battlefield with warmth and comforting reminders of home.

NEQM Curator and quilt historian, Pamela Weeks, shares the fascinating stories behind these group-made quilts and shares how this tradition of collaborative quilting continues today.
