Applique Quilts Inspired by Civil War Healthcare Workers
On View July 20 through October 1, 2022
Barbara Brackman is a preeminent quilt scholar whose popular Civil War Quilts blog features a “quilt-a-long” for her followers. Brackman provides a block pattern each month and includes stories about many aspects of the Civil War, all related to quilts. In 2019, the quilt-a-long featured stories about Civil War hospital workers. Women and men played many roles in Civil War hospitals: matrons, social workers, suppliers of food and bedding, bedside visitors, laundresses, cooks and orderlies. Several hundred people downloaded the monthly pattern. Some made exact copies; others adapted the pattern for their own variations. Some of Brackman’s favorites were selected for this exhibition of 14 quilts.
